[Asia Economy Reporter Donghyun Choi] Hwang Hee, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, visited the content industry site and promised to prepare support measures for recovery from COVID-19 damage.
On the 13th, Minister Hwang held a meeting with domestic content industry workers at the Content Korea Lab (CKL) Enterprise Support Center located in Jung-gu, Seoul. Representatives or officials from content companies in various fields such as broadcasting (documentary), games, animation, characters, comics, music (performance), and storytelling attended the meeting.
Minister Hwang said, "We will steadily promote the job support projects in broadcasting video, popular music, and export sectors, which were organized in this year's supplementary budget," adding, "We will also create a 25 billion KRW fund called the ‘Content Recovery Support Fund’ to help the industry's recovery."
He continued, "The normalization of the content industry, which is a new growth engine of our economy, and the discovery of new markets are of utmost importance," promising, "We will continue to hold opportunities to listen to the voices of field workers and establish effective support policies that can be felt on site."
Korea's content industry is experiencing a situation where fields based on online markets such as online games, video services, and webtoons are expanding amid the COVID-19 crisis, while face-to-face consumption-centered fields such as movies, popular music, and performances are in decline. As content creation, production, and investment shrink, a situation of coexistence of crisis and opportunity is unfolding.
Attendees expressed difficulties in the content industry field, including management crises such as decreased sales and lack of funds due to the impact of COVID-19, delays and cancellations of content creation and production projects, and employment instability of workers. They also requested continuous government interest and support.
