China Urges Japan to Be Cautious in Discharging Radioactive Wastewater Ahead of Release

[Asia Economy Reporter Song Seung-seop] The Chinese government has expressed concerns to Japan, which is about to decide on the marine discharge of contaminated water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant.

On the 12th, Zhao Lijian, spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated, "The Fukushima nuclear accident has had a profound impact on the marine environment, food safety, and human health," emphasizing that "the handling of wastewater issues is related to international public and neighboring countries' interests." He added, "It is necessary to carefully understand the situation and involve relevant parties to minimize the damage to the marine environment, food, and human health."

He said, "The international community is currently paying attention to Japan," and "Japan's responsibility for international public interests is equivalent to its responsibility for the interests of its own citizens." He also mentioned, "China has already expressed serious concerns to Japan through diplomatic channels and demanded that Japan handle the wastewater treatment issue of the Fukushima nuclear power plant cautiously and with a responsible attitude." Japan will announce its decision on marine discharge on the 13th.
