Bio cosmetic company BHLAB (CEO Hyeongjin Bae) is launching the functional shampoo brand 'Modamoda (MODA MODA)'. Additionally, the new product 'Modamoda Prochange Black Shampoo' is scheduled to be pre-launched in overseas markets through the global crowdfunding platform Kickstarter in May.
This product, co-developed with KAIST researchers, a cradle of domestic science and technology, and Dr. Haesin Lee, a world-renowned authority in chemical research at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), is developed based on a patented natural ingredient that darkens gradually to a dark brown color through reactions with oxygen and sunlight.
The product was developed inspired by the browning phenomenon of insect wound self-healing substances and the browning process of fruits turning black for antioxidant purposes. It features 0% harmful ingredients including 0% hair dye components, silicone, sulfate-based surfactants, and seven other harmful substances, excluding animal and mineral raw materials entirely. It is made with 2,000 PPM of antioxidant active ingredients and 100% plant-derived ingredients.
The main antioxidant ingredient is the BHLAB Complex extracted from black sesame extract and black mulberry fruit extract. The effective ingredients protect the scalp and hair, revitalizing them, helping with color change of gray hair and addressing hair care concerns and volume improvement for middle-aged consumers.
Co-developer, KAIST Chair Professor Haesin Lee explained the product development background: "It is composed of 8-free ingredients that exclude all harmful substances to the scalp, without using harmful dye components such as PPDA, 5-diamine, and toluene sulfate. The principle is based on catecholamine chemical reactions applying natural browning phenomena, restoring gray hair without melanin to a natural black-brown color. This allowed commercialization using only safe ingredients rated EWG GREEN without the need for harmful hair dye components."
BHLAB CEO Hyeongjin Bae said, "Kickstarter is a testbed to showcase excellent new products worldwide for the first time. Through a successful launch, we want to export to the U.S., Europe, Japan, and more, spreading the excellence of K-Beauty products globally."
Meanwhile, due to the impact of COVID-19, home grooming product sales have surged, and as of March 2021, the export value of Korean shampoo products reached USD 14,228,934, approximately 15.9 billion KRW. The market movement is drawing attention with the launch of hair darkening products as alternatives to chemical hair dyes.
