[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Choyoung] A traditional market in Jeju is facing controversy for issuing a notice that violates COVID-19 self-quarantine guidelines. The market association also urged people not to disclose the occurrence of confirmed cases, drawing criticism.
According to a post uploaded on an online community on the 10th, the market association stated, "A COVID-19 confirmed case has occurred in our market," and added, "All merchants and workers are subject to testing. Normally, self-quarantine is required after testing, but due to the nature of the market, quarantine will not be enforced."
They further urged, "While waiting for the test results, only go between home and the store and be sure to wear a mask," and added, "Do not disclose the fact that a confirmed case has occurred to outsiders. Only we will suffer losses."
The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency recommends that even if a close contact tests negative for COVID-19, they should self-quarantine together with cohabitants.
The author of the post criticized, "It is absurd to neither self-quarantine nor disclose the case," and said, "Although everyone knows because the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters sent a text message, it is too much to just let this pass." The author also attached a photo of the notice issued by the market association.
Meanwhile, one confirmed case occurred at the market, and Jeju quarantine authorities set up a walk-through screening clinic at Seogwipo Health Center for merchants and others from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on the 10th and from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the 11th to conduct testing.
