Say "Saenghwal Silheomshil" Instead of "Living Lab"

'Popup Garden' Alternative Term Recommended as 'Banjjak Garden'

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the National Institute of the Korean Language recommended on the 12th that the term 'living lab' be replaced with the Korean term 'saenghwal silheomshil' (생활 실험실). They also suggested 'banjjak jeongwon' (반짝 정원) as the Korean alternative for 'pop-up garden.'

A living lab refers to a space or community where local residents, experts, and others collaborate through experiments to find solutions to social issues in everyday life. The selection of the alternative term 'saenghwal silheomshil' was based on survey results. In a public acceptance survey conducted from the 5th to the 8th with about 1,000 participants, 85.2% of respondents answered that the term was appropriate.

A pop-up garden refers to a small-scale garden-like space or facility created during festivals or events. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the National Institute of the Korean Language decided on 'banjjak jeongwon' as the alternative term at the Saemal Meeting held from the 2nd to the 4th.

The Saemal Meeting is a committee that provides Korean alternative terms easily understood by the general public before difficult foreign neologisms spread. Experts from various fields such as Korean language, foreign languages, education, publicity and publishing, information and communications, and media participate. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the National Institute of the Korean Language plan to continuously promote the proactive use of these alternative terms by government ministries and media outlets.
