[Asia Economy Reporter Park Byung-hee] Actress Youn Yuh-jung won the Best Supporting Actress award at the British Academy Film Awards.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) announced Youn Yuh-jung as the winner of the Best Supporting Actress award for the film "Minari" at the '2021 British Academy Film Awards' ceremony held at the Royal Albert Hall in London on the 11th (local time).

In her acceptance speech delivered via video, Youn joked that while all awards are meaningful, this one is especially significant and an honor because the British, known for being "posh," recognized her as a good actress, drawing laughter and applause. She also expressed condolences on the passing of Prince Philip, the husband of Queen Elizabeth II.

Following her win at the Screen Actors Guild Awards (SAG), Youn Yuh-jung's receipt of the BAFTA Best Supporting Actress award has increased expectations that she may win an Academy Award in the United States.

As one of the most prestigious film awards in the English-speaking world, the BAFTAs do not distinguish between British and American films, making it a good indicator of the potential outcome of the American Academy Awards.

"Minari" was nominated in six categories at this year's BAFTAs, including Best Foreign Language Film, Best Director, Best Supporting Actress and Actor, Best Original Music, and Best Casting, but unfortunately won only one award.

Previously, director Park Chan-wook's "The Handmaiden" won Best Foreign Language Film, and director Bong Joon-ho's "Parasite" won Best Foreign Language Film and Best Original Screenplay.

This year's Best Picture award went to "Nomadland," and its director, Chinese-born female director Chlo? Zhao, won Best Director. Actor Anthony Hopkins, in his 80s, won Best Actor again after more than 20 years for "The Father."
