[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunju Lee] The upcoming election for the next floor leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, to be held on the 16th, is expected to be a three-way contest among four-term lawmakers An Gyu-baek and Yoon Ho-jung, and three-term lawmaker Park Wan-joo.
They are scheduled to announce their candidacies sequentially on the morning of the 12th, the deadline for floor leader candidate registration. The floor leader elected this time will concurrently serve as the emergency committee chairperson until the next party leader is elected, holding the key to deciding the ruling party's policy direction, including modifications to real estate policies. Three-term lawmaker Kim Kyung-hyup was also mentioned as a possible candidate but has decided not to run.
The floor leader election is structured as a competition between pro-Moon faction lawmaker Yoon and non-mainstream lawmakers An and Park. Yoon, classified as a pro-Moon faction aligned with Lee Hae-chan, had previously conceded his candidacy in last year's floor leader race by unifying with former floor leader Kim Tae-nyeon.
An, a former party official, is classified as part of the Jeong Se-gyun faction, while Park is a member of the '86 Group' and was active in the Democratic Peace People's Solidarity (Minpyeongryeon), affiliated with the late lawmaker Kim Geun-tae.
The final decision will be made after two debates on the 13th and 15th.
