As the full spring atmosphere arrives and colorful flowers begin to bloom, with daytime temperatures approaching 20 degrees Celsius, spring fatigue follows the warm sunshine.


Spring fatigue is a temporary symptom characterized by a lack of energy and a sluggish feeling during the spring season, as the name suggests.


It can be described as a type of fatigue phenomenon caused by stimulation of the central nervous system and other factors during the process of the body, which had been contracted during the cold winter, adjusting to the warm spring.


In spring, as the nights gradually shorten, days lengthen, and temperatures rise, skin temperature also increases, causing muscles to relax and resulting in a feeling of lethargy.


With increased outdoor activities, the consumption of various nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, and proteins rises, and if these are not sufficiently replenished, it can lead to nutritional imbalance.


Typical symptoms of spring fatigue include tiredness, drowsiness, indigestion, loss of appetite, lethargy, dizziness, and insomnia, and these usually disappear naturally after 1 to 3 weeks.


To overcome spring fatigue, it is important to supply sufficient nutrition through fresh vegetables and fruits, as this period involves increased metabolic activity and a higher demand for vitamins.


Also, it is beneficial to engage regularly in light exercise such as walking or stretching that suits the individual.


If feeling tired and sleepy, taking a short nap of about 20 minutes is good, but sleeping too long may make it difficult to fall asleep at night.


Even if sleep duration varies, it is best to maintain a consistent wake-up time, reduce high indoor temperatures, light, and noise that interfere with deep sleep, and avoid caffeine, smoking, alcohol, and overeating before bedtime.

Hwang Hye-rim, Manager of the Health Screening Center at Daedong Hospital (Family Medicine Specialist), said, “Spring fatigue naturally disappears after a certain period, but if symptoms persist or worsen to the point of interfering with daily life, it may be another illness and should be carefully observed.”


Manager Hwang advised, “Diseases such as diabetes, liver and thyroid disorders, anemia, rheumatism, chronic stress, and insomnia show symptoms similar to spring fatigue, so if symptoms are prolonged and severe, it is advisable to visit a medical institution for diagnosis.”
