Weekend Testing Decrease Impact... Mid-term Confirmed Cases Also Slightly Reduced
[Asia Economy Reporter Junhyung Lee] As the spread of COVID-19 continues, new confirmed cases were reported nationwide on the 10th as well.
According to the quarantine authorities, Seoul city, and other local governments, from midnight to 9 p.m. on that day, a total of 560 new confirmed COVID-19 cases were recorded nationwide. This is 60 fewer than the 620 cases recorded at the same time the previous day. This appears to partly reflect the decrease in testing over the weekend.
By region, the metropolitan area accounted for 389 cases (69.5%), and non-metropolitan areas accounted for 171 cases (30.5%). By city and province, Seoul reported 207 cases, Gyeonggi 165, Busan 42, Jeonbuk 37, Chungnam 18, Incheon 17, Gyeongnam 16, Gyeongbuk 13, Ulsan 11, Chungbuk 10, Daejeon 7, Daegu and Gangwon 5 each, Jeonnam and Jeju 3 each, and Sejong 1. Among the 17 cities and provinces nationwide, no confirmed cases have yet been reported in Gwangju.
With time remaining until midnight when the tally closes, the number of new confirmed cases announced as of 0 a.m. on the 11th is expected to increase further, reaching around 600, possibly in the low to mid-600s. The previous day, 57 additional cases were reported after 9 p.m., bringing the final total to 677.
New confirmed cases had fluctuated between 300 and 400 for over a month, recently rising through the 500 to 600 range and reaching the 700s. Over the past week, the daily new confirmed cases were 543 → 473 → 477 → 668 → 700 → 671 → 677. This averages to about 601 cases per day.
The key indicator for adjusting the 'social distancing' level, the daily average of locally transmitted cases, stands at 579. This exceeds the range for distancing level 2.5 (nationwide 400 to 500 or more).
Confirmed cases have been reported continuously in places such as academies, churches, and saunas. Major infection cases include the third case at a sauna in Seongbuk-gu, Seoul (cumulative 16 cases), a practical music academy in Goyang-si, Gyeonggi (19 cases), family-church cluster in Iksan-si, Jeonbuk (17 cases), church cluster in Gyeongsan-si, Gyeongbuk (14 cases), and the second case at a senior day care center in Gimhae-si, Gyeongnam (21 cases).
