[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Sumi] Chinese cultural heritage authorities have announced plans to strengthen crackdowns on counterfeit facilities that imitate famous cultural heritage sites within the country.
On the 10th (local time), according to the official website of the China National Cultural Heritage Administration, the National Cultural Heritage Administration and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism recently issued a "Notice on Resolutely Curbing the Reckless Construction of Fake Cultural Heritage."
The notice includes measures to strengthen enforcement against counterfeit facilities.
The authorities stated, "In recent years, some localities have been attracting tourists with fake cultural heritage sites," adding, "Some have trivialized or alienated cultural heritage, misleading the public's understanding of historical culture and causing negative cultural impacts."
They also pointed out the negative effects of fake cultural heritage, such as resource waste, incorrect transmission of historical culture, and environmental destruction, emphasizing in particular that "reckless construction of counterfeit facilities at important sites such as World Cultural Heritage sites and China's key cultural relic protection units must be clearly opposed."
Furthermore, the authorities instructed relevant local departments to immediately rectify and report any cases of reckless construction of fake cultural heritage, historical distortion, false propaganda, or misleading public perception.
Meanwhile, the state-run media Global Times described the notice as a "declaration of war on fake relics." It reported that facilities crudely replicating famous sites such as the Great Wall, the Terracotta Army, and the Forbidden City are commonly seen in small and medium-sized cities across China, and that there are more than ten counterfeit facilities of Tiananmen (天安門) nationwide.
