[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Daehyun] Regarding the incident of a North Korean man’s ‘swimming defection,’ a military officer belonging to the relevant military unit took his own life, prompting the military to launch an investigation to ascertain the facts.


According to the Army and media reports on the 8th, Sergeant A, who was serving in an Army unit at the front line in Gangwon Province, took his own life on the 25th of last month. He was reportedly a member of the 22nd Division unit that was responsible for the ‘swimming defection’ incident in February, where a North Korean man swam across the sea to the South.


An Army official stated that an investigation into Sergeant A’s death is underway, and at this point, it is not possible to definitively determine the reasons for his extreme decision.
