[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Jung-yoon] When an apartment in Seoul blocked delivery vehicles from entering, delivery workers declared a halt to deliveries to each household.
The National Delivery Workers' Union of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions Service Federation held a press conference on the 8th in front of Apartment A in Gangdong-gu, stating, "Banning delivery vehicles from entering the complex is a typical abuse of power," and "If this is not withdrawn, we will stop individual deliveries in this apartment and only deliver up to the complex entrance."
Apartment A, with about 5,000 households, notified delivery workers from the 1st of this month that delivery vehicles are prohibited from using the aboveground roads within the complex, and they must either deliver to each household using handcarts or use low-floor vehicles that can access the underground parking lot.
The delivery union argued, "Using handcarts increases delivery time by about three times and raises the risk of product damage," adding, "Working in low-floor vehicles requires bending over, which worsens musculoskeletal disorders in the back, neck, shoulders, and knees."
They continued, "If the apartment management insists on the current method, from the 14th, this place will be designated as an 'apartment where individual deliveries are not possible,' and items will be handed over to customers who come to the apartment entrance," and apologized, "We ask for the understanding of residents who will inevitably experience inconvenience."
Furthermore, the delivery union emphasized, "The apartment's policy cannot be a practical alternative," and stressed, "The problem should be resolved by allowing delivery vehicles to enter the complex while implementing additional safety measures."
