Increase in Detergent Sales Due to Fine Dust... Olive Young's 'Cleansing & Oral Care Battle'


[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Yuri] Demand for cleansing products and related items is increasing due to fine dust caused by yellow dust.


CJ Olive Young announced on the 8th that sales of cleansing and oral care products increased by 21% and 27%, respectively, compared to the same period last year, from March 1 to April 7. This year, sales patterns are showing different trends from previous years due to the prolonged use of masks.


In the cleansing product category, as fine dust concentration increased, sales of cleansing foam rose by about 26%, surpassing the overall growth rate of the product category. With "mask beauty," which emphasizes makeup points around the eyes, becoming a new trend, sales of eye and lip removers increased by 25%. The trend of seeking products that are soothing and mildly acidic, causing less skin irritation, has also continued into this year.


Oral care products continue to show strong performance, especially mouthwash, which saw rapid growth last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Interest in oral health, including bad breath caused by mask-wearing, has increased, leading to about a 30% surge in sales of floss and interdental brushes, along with mouthwash and oral sprays, resulting in overall growth across the oral care product category. Sales of lens cleaning solutions also increased by about 16% as more people seek to care for eyes irritated and dry from fine dust.


To target this demand, Olive Young is holding a "Cleansing & Oral Care Products Fair" at nationwide stores and its official online mall until the 15th. Popular products such as "Bioderma Sensibio H2O" and "Therabreath Oral Rinse Rainforest Mint" are available in "Buy One Get One Free (1+1)" offers or at discounts of up to 60%. Customers who purchase cleansing products worth 20,000 won or more will receive a "Cleansing Kit," and those who purchase oral care products worth 10,000 won or more will receive an "Oral Care Kit," both on a first-come, first-served basis.


An Olive Young representative said, "Last year, yellow dust and fine dust were not severe, so sales of cleansing products and related items were similar to the previous year. However, this year, due to the sharp increase in fine dust, the popularity of related products is expected to continue for the time being."
