[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Dong-hyun] BTS's hit song 'Dynamite' has broken Psy's record for the longest-charting Korean song on Billboard's main singles chart, the 'Hot 100.'
According to Billboard on the 6th (local time), 'Dynamite' ranked 30th on the latest Hot 100 chart, dropping 4 places from the previous week, maintaining its position on the chart for 32 consecutive weeks. With this, 'Dynamite' surpassed Psy's global hit 'Gangnam Style,' which previously held the record for the longest entry by a Korean artist on the Hot 100 (31 weeks).
Released on August 21 last year, 'Dynamite' was the first song by a Korean artist to reach number one on the Hot 100. Since then, the ranking of 'Dynamite' had gradually declined this year, but it rebounded after BTS performed the song at the '2021 Grammy Awards,' the most prestigious music awards ceremony in the United States, held on the 14th of last month.
Billboard removes songs from the Hot 100 chart if they have been on the chart for over 20 weeks and fall below the 50th position, to make room for new entries. 'Dynamite' has not yet fallen outside the top 50 since its release.
'Dynamite' also set a new record by holding the number one spot for 18 weeks on Billboard's 'Digital Song Sales' chart, which ranks songs based on digital downloads. This surpassed the previous record of 17 weeks set by Luis Fonsi, Daddy Yankee, and Justin Bieber's song 'Despacito.'
