[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Bong-ju] Amid a series of anti-Asian hate crimes in the United States, a video showing robbers fleeing after being chased by the son of an Asian elderly couple wielding a knife has gone viral on social media.
According to foreign media on the 5th (local time), on the 29th of last month in Oakland, California, an Asian elderly couple in their 70s encountered robbers at the front door of their home after returning from a grocery store.
In the video posted on social media, four robbers surrounded the elderly couple at the entrance of the front steps and searched their pockets. The grandmother reached out her hand to resist, but the robbers overpowered her and stole their belongings.
At that moment, the son, who heard his mother's screams from inside the house, ran out barefoot holding a machete (a broad, long blade). Seeing the son, the robbers fled in haste, getting into a car parked nearby and escaping.
The son, who has a strong build, said, "I ran out after hearing my mother's screams," adding, "If I hadn't come out, my parents' situation would have been worse."
It is reported that the robbers took the grandfather's cellphone and keys, and the grandmother's gold chain. Local media stated that it is still unclear whether the motive behind this incident was anti-Asian hate.
