On the 5th, KBS News reported that since last week, a mass die-off of shellfish has been discovered in a tidal flat in Seocheon-gun, Chungnam.
According to the KBS report, Seocheon-gun requested analysis from the National Institute of Fisheries Science and others, considering the possibility of pollution inflow or disease outbreak to identify the cause.
On a Seocheon coast, at low tide, white shells of shellfish are piled up in the exposed tidal flat. These are shellfish washed ashore by the seawater.
Every step taken on the exposed tidal flat reveals numerous dead shellfish. The situation is the same inside the tidal flat.
The mass die-off in the tidal flat began to be discovered since last week, and the decaying dead shellfish in the area are causing a severe foul odor.
Seocheon-gun estimates that 80% of the shellfish inhabiting the 1 million square meter tidal flat along the coast have died.
As a result, fishermen who operated tidal flat experience sites or harvested and sold shellfish have lost their jobs.
Seocheon-gun collected samples and requested analysis from the National Institute of Fisheries Science and others to investigate the clear cause of the mass die-off.
They also temporarily banned the harvesting of the mass-died shellfish.
