Corporate Social Responsibility Activity Transplanting Acorn Seedlings Grown by Employees to Growth Sites
Supporting Growth of 300 Acorn Trees...Reducing 36g of Fine Dust per Tree
Second U+ Hope Tree Campaign to be Held This Year...“Strengthening ESG Management through Environmental Protection”
[Asia Economy Reporter Eunmo Koo] LG Uplus has launched a ‘forest care’ initiative to achieve carbon neutrality as part of its ESG management efforts.
On Arbor Day, LG Uplus announced on the 5th that its employees transplanted 300 oak tree saplings they had nurtured to Noeul Forest in Sangam-dong, Seoul, as part of the ‘U+ Hope Tree’ social contribution activity.
Carbon neutrality refers to a state where the amount of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide absorbed offsets the actual emissions to zero. Generally, a mature oak tree reduces 2.5 tons of carbon dioxide and 35.7g of fine dust annually per tree. When 300 trees grow to maturity, it is expected to reduce over 750 tons of carbon dioxide and more than 10kg of fine dust annually.
On the 2nd, LG Uplus employees transplanted 300 oak saplings they had personally grown to the Jaramtuh area of Noeul Park in Seoul. To grow saplings into mature trees, they need to be transplanted to a tree-growing site with sufficient nutrients and space. The saplings moved to the growing site will be managed by the ‘Noeul Forest Citizens’ Association’ and relocated again to a nearby forest after two years.
Previously, over 300 LG Uplus employees began nurturing acorn seeds in November last year, growing them into saplings about the size of a hand span over approximately 100 days. Participants in the event transplanted both the saplings they personally grew and those nurtured by employees who could not visit due to COVID-19 to the growing site.
LG Uplus plans to continue the U+ Hope Tree activities steadily. In the second quarter, a second campaign will be launched targeting 500 employees to nurture acorn seeds.
Baek Yongdae, head of LG Uplus’s CSR team, stated, “South Korea ranks seventh in the world for greenhouse gas emissions, and emissions are rapidly increasing every year. LG Uplus plans to carry out various ESG activities related to the environment to realize carbon neutrality.”
