“Avoid Mass Gatherings, Focus on Contributing to Substantive Truth-Finding”
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] The 41st anniversary 5·18 People's Uprising Commemoration Committee was launched under the slogan "May, Meeting the Era Eye to Eye, Keeping Pace with Generations."
On the 1st, the 5·18 Commemoration Committee paid respects at the National 5·18 Democratic Cemetery and held a launch press conference at the 5·18 Archives in Dong-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City, stating, "As we mark the 41st anniversary, the People's Uprising Commemoration event will strive to become a driving force to overcome the crisis of the era through 5·18 and to derive practical tasks and take action to create a new era."
They added, "This slogan reflects the 41 years of time and flow, embodying a commitment and determination to overcome today's crisis and open a new day based on the May spirit, in harmony with various generations and keeping pace with the changed era."
The 41st anniversary 5·18 commemoration event will refrain from holding gatherings in accordance with social distancing level 1.5, adapting to the COVID-19 disaster situation.
The committee emphasized, "Although gatherings are difficult, we will prioritize the first task of contributing to the substantive truth-finding of 5·18," and stated, "We will expand the 5·18 Spirit Succession Sector Conference, where voices from various fields regarding alternatives and practical tasks to overcome the current crisis are revealed, and wisdom is gathered on how to embody the 5·18 spirit."
Furthermore, they added, "We will focus on encouraging participation from future generations across all areas of the event, pursuing understanding, communication, and solidarity between experienced generations and those who remember through records, and strive to pursue diversity and harmony through events that combine commemoration, succession of the 5·18 spirit, memorial, and struggle festivals."
