[Asia Economy Reporter Koo Chae-eun] Park Young-sun, the Democratic Party of Korea's candidate for Seoul mayor, continued her negative campaign strategy by focusing on the allegations of preferential compensation for land in Naegok-dong, the Yongsan tragedy, and the Saebit Floating Island, highlighting the mistakes of Oh Se-hoon, the People Power Party candidate, on the 31st following the previous day's TV debate. She brought up Oh's contradictory statements, controversies over lies, and administrative failures to break the frame of the 'regime judgment theory' triggered by the ruling party's scandals such as the LH incident.
On the day, Park appeared on TBS's 'Kim Eo-jun's News Factory' and said, “When I asked during yesterday's TV debate whether I had been to the surveying site of the Naegok-dong land or not, I looked at Oh's facial expression and was convinced that ‘this person had been there.’ At that moment, he said, ‘I didn't go. But we must be humble before memory,’ leaving a pretext.”
Park also said, “What I felt during the TV debate was that if this person becomes mayor, tremendous chaos will come,” adding, “I got the impression that he is very autocratic, and since most of the Seoul City Council members are from the Democratic Party, I felt it would be difficult to communicate if such a person becomes mayor.” She also mentioned that Oh's unilateral confirmation of the debate schedule without consultation was an example of his ‘lack of communication.’ Park directly criticized, “There were four debate proposals, and two were left while negotiations were ongoing, but he publicly declared that only one was left. This itself is autocratic and arbitrary.”
She actively explained her controversial remarks. On the 25th, Park drew criticism for saying to a convenience store owner after experiencing work as a part-time employee, “Wouldn't it be good to operate as an unmanned store at night?” Regarding this, she said, “I meant that night shifts harm health, so through unmanned stores, people can have a life with evenings,” and countered, “It seems the opposition party either lacks understanding of the Fourth Industrial Revolution or distorts it knowingly.”
Park emphasized, “Seoul citizens should judge a candidate who lies, the mismanagement over the past five years in the last ten years, the Yongsan tragedy, the Gangnam flood, and outdated administration like the Saebit Floating Island, and whether these can lead Seoul's future,” adding, “To end COVID-19, Seoul's administration must be stable, but if a candidate who causes chaos is elected, Seoul will regress ten years and become a hotbed of political strife.”
