Wavve Exclusively Releases High-Definition Restored Version of Taegukgi: The Brotherhood of War for Monthly Subscribers

[Asia Economy Reporter Joeslgina] "Taegukgi Hwinalrimyeo," the second Korean film to surpass 10 million viewers, will be exclusively available on the subscription-based OTT platform Wavve for the first time in 17 years.

Content Wavve, the operator of the OTT platform Wavve, announced on the 31st that it will restore and present 11 classic Korean films, including "Taegukgi Hwinalrimyeo," in high-definition resolution. Starring Jang Dong-gun and Won Bin, "Taegukgi Hwinalrimyeo" is a drama set against the backdrop of the Korean War, depicting the tragic fate and family story of estranged brothers. Upon its release, it was praised for both its artistic quality and popularity, marking the dawn of the Korean film renaissance.

Accordingly, Wavve subscription users can watch these films without additional charges, unlike the single-purchase options available in theaters or on other OTT platforms.

Going forward, classic films such as director Jeong Jin-woo’s "Does the Cuckoo Cry at Night (1980)," which holds the record for the most awards in nine categories at the Grand Bell Awards, as well as "The Parrot Cried with a Human Body (1981)," "Janyeomok (1984)," "The Rose That Swallowed Thorns (1979)," and "Baekguya, Don’t Fly Away (1982)" will be sequentially released exclusively on the subscription service.

Additionally, remastered versions of nostalgic films like "Mongjeonggi," "Danjeokbi Yeonsu," "Besame Mucho," "Over the Rainbow," and "Abengo Gongsugongdan" will also be provided.

Han Seung-hee, head of Content Wavve’s Overseas Acquisition Unit, said, "With new releases delayed due to COVID-19, demand for classic films is increasing. We hope viewers enjoy the emotions of past masterpieces more vividly through remastered versions."

Since launching the "Masterpiece Hall" last year, which offers past popular series VODs, Wavve has been expanding remastered VODs and continuously updating them with enhanced image quality. In Wavve’s Masterpiece Hall, viewers can enjoy nostalgic classics such as "Sandglass," "Dragon’s Tears," and "Three Men, Three Women" in improved picture quality.
