[Sejong=Asia Economy Reporter Joo Sang-don] The 'Autonomous Driving Technology Development Innovation Project Group,' which will lead the commercialization of Level 4 autonomous vehicles by investing a total of 1.1 trillion KRW by 2027, will officially launch on the 24th.
On this day, four ministries?the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, the Ministry of Science and ICT, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, and the National Police Agency?will hold the innovation project group launch ceremony at the Korea Automobile Hall.
The project group is a newly established public interest corporation created to promote more organic progress and strengthen the commercialization of research outcomes for the 'Autonomous Driving Technology Development Innovation Project,' which the four ministries have officially started this year. It consists of a total of 17 personnel, including Project Group Leader Choi Jin-woo, a former PM executive at Hyundai Kia Motors.
The project group will comprehensively plan and manage the autonomous driving technology development innovation projects that have been promoted separately by each ministry. It plans to focus on promoting commercialization such as the dissemination and expansion of project outcomes, as well as serving as a bridge for public-private cooperation.
The Autonomous Driving Technology Development Innovation Project is a multi-ministry project investing a total of 1.0974 trillion KRW from this year until 2027, aiming to complete the foundation for commercialization of converged Level 4+ autonomous driving by 2027. Level 4 refers to autonomous driving capable of operating without control transfer in specific sections. Level 4+ includes infrastructure and social services.
Park Jin-gyu, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, said, "The government will spare no comprehensive support to foster autonomous driving, one of the two major pillars of the future car New Deal alongside eco-friendly vehicles, as a core growth engine to enhance the competitiveness of our automobile industry and to lead the future market." He added, "For this, the project group should make every effort to create an ecosystem of convergence and linkage and to manage the project with a focus on performance."
