[Asia Economy Beijing=Special Correspondent Jo Young-shin] It is forecasted that the number of electric vehicles in China will reach 100 million in 10 to 15 years. As of the end of last year, there were 4 million pure electric vehicles operating in China.

According to Chinese economic media Caixin and Pengpai on the 22nd, Professor Ouyang Minggao of Tsinghua University said at the China Development Forum held on the 20th, "We are experiencing an energy revolution," adding, "The power of the energy revolution comes from energy storage devices (batteries)."

He predicted, "Electric vehicles will become an industry leading a new industrial revolution," and "Ultimately, they will realize the complete electrification of transportation."

He continued, "The popularization of electric vehicles in China will occur rapidly," and optimistically stated, "In the next 10 to 15 years, the number of registered electric vehicles in China will approach 100 million."

As of the end of last year, the total number of registered vehicles in China was 281 million, of which 4 million were pure electric vehicles. He explained that the registration of electric vehicles will increase more than 24 times in just 10 to 15 years.

Regarding hydrogen energy vehicles, he said that hydrogen cars are suitable for commercial vehicles, especially those operating long distances such as trucks. He also predicted a high possibility that hydrogen energy will be used in transportation means such as trains and ships. He compared electric vehicles to the existing gasoline engine market, while hydrogen vehicles correspond to the diesel engine market.

About China's electric vehicle technology, he said, "China's electric vehicle production and battery technology are world-leading," and "Chinese brands have the technological capability to compete with the world's top brands."
