According to the Hong Kong South China Morning Post (SCMP) on the 22nd, Zhang Jing, who interpreted the opening remarks of Yang Jiechi, a member of the Communist Party's Political Bureau in charge of foreign affairs, at the talks on the 18th, is becoming a hot topic in China.
At that time, Yang expressed dissatisfaction toward the US, saying, "China's internal affairs should not be interfered with." He exceeded the pre-agreed 2 minutes and continued sharp criticism for 15 minutes without pause, responding to the US mentioning issues such as Xinjiang Uyghur, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.
Interpreter Zhang was praised for smoothly interpreting despite the tense atmosphere. Even when Yang continued speaking for 24 minutes, rebutting the US remarks, Zhang remained calm and composed.

Interpreter Zhang began gaining recognition in 2013 when he interpreted at the annual sessions of the National People's Congress and the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference held in Beijing.
Originally from Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, he graduated from Hangzhou Foreign Language School in 2003 and majored in English at China Foreign Affairs University. After graduation, he was officially hired as an interpreter by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2007.
