[Asia Economy Reporter Donghyun Choi] The Organizing Committee for the 2024 Gangwon Winter Youth Olympic Games announced on the 22nd that it is recruiting 30 'Youth Supporters (tentative name)' who will directly participate in the preparation and promotion of the Games with innovative ideas.
The 2024 Gangwon Winter Youth Olympic Games will be held across Gangwon Province from January 19 to February 2, 2024, with approximately 2,600 participants including athletes and officials from over 70 countries.
The Youth Olympics aims to be a Games ‘For Youth, With Youth, By Youth,’ where young people directly participate in all stages of planning, preparation, and hosting. Starting with the 'Youth Supporters,' the Organizing Committee plans to operate various communication channels for youth participation in the future.
Selected members will participate directly in the Organizing Committee’s promotional content creation process over one year, including introducing the Games, sharing their hopes for Gangwon 2024, visiting the event sites, and interviewing athletes. Based on the supporters’ activities, the Committee will produce and disseminate official promotional content and incorporate their ideas into various planning processes to ensure Gangwon 2024 becomes a Games made together with youth.
Youth Supporters are open to anyone aged 13 to 24 residing in Korea, including foreigners, with preference given to applicants who actively manage personal social media accounts.
The Organizing Committee will recognize volunteer hours based on activity performance and provide additional benefits such as awards to outstanding participants after the activities conclude.
The Committee plans to have the final 30 selected Youth Supporters develop the official name of the group, currently tentatively called ‘Youth Supporters,’ to fully embody the spirit of a ‘Games made directly by youth.’
Chairman Shin Chang-jae said, “The 2024 Gangwon Winter Youth Olympic Games can only be successfully hosted if the youth, who are the main protagonists, actively participate from the early stages of the Games,” adding, “We hope Gangwon 2024, as an international sports event, will be an opportunity to cultivate the global capabilities of youth as future leaders and to spread the Olympic spirit and values locally, nationally, and internationally.”
The application period is from today until April 11, and applications can be submitted via the Organizing Committee’s email.
