[Asia Economy Reporter Seongpil Cho] Despite international pressure, the military and police's violent crackdown on protesters opposing the Myanmar coup continues, prompting the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Myanmar to pursue additional temporary flights for the return of Korean residents.
The Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Myanmar announced on the 20th that it is in discussions with aviation authorities to arrange additional temporary flights operated by Myanmar Airways International (MAI) on the 26th and 30th to support the return of Korean residents. The embassy cited the escalating instability following the recent declaration of martial law and recommended that Korean residents wishing to return before the local New Year (Thingyan) holidays next month use these temporary flights. Furthermore, to address concerns of residents hesitant to return due to re-entry issues into Myanmar, negotiations have effectively doubled the Myanmar entry quota from the initial 20 people.
Meanwhile, local media reported that at least 234 people have lost their lives so far due to live ammunition fired by military and police forces during protests against the military coup that occurred on the 1st of last month in Myanmar. There are also numerous seriously injured individuals, raising concerns that the number of casualties may increase.
