"Finding My True Self... Surgery Not Only Changed My Life but Also Saved It"
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Bong-ju] Hollywood star Elliot Page, who transitioned to male, recently revealed that he underwent a double mastectomy.
On the 16th (local time), Page appeared as the cover model for the American newsweekly Time magazine. In an interview with Time, he opened up about his feelings as a transgender man.
Page said, "I am truly excited to have reached this point in my life. I feel deep gratitude," adding, "At the same time, there is a mix of fear and anxiety."
He continued, "Since coming out as transgender, I have experienced various reactions. I have received many words of love and support, but at the same time, I have had to endure tremendous hatred and transphobia."
According to Time, on the day Page came out, he gained about 400,000 new Instagram followers.
Page stated, "Very influential people are saying harmful things about transgender people. But transgender people really do exist."
He recalled, "I remember the vivid joy I felt when I cut my hair short around the age of nine. When I started my career as a child actor at age ten, I had to grow my hair and dress as an actress. I could never accept myself. For a long time, I couldn't even look at my own photos."
Page also revealed that he recently underwent breast removal surgery. He emphasized, "The surgery focused on making my chest look more masculine. I removed unnecessary tissue to become male. A female body was always uncomfortable, but now I am full of energy. The surgery not only changed my life but also saved it."
He added, "Thanks to the privilege of being an actor, I was able to reach my current position. I want to use that privilege to help transgender people in any way I can."
