[Asia Economy Reporter Heo Midam] A story has become a hot topic about an elderly woman suffering from dementia who got lost in the freezing cold at midnight but safely returned to her family thanks to her pet dog.
According to the Jeju Police Agency on the 12th, a report was received on the night of the 18th of last month, when the severe cold wave was at its peak, stating that "an elderly woman without shoes was in a building parking lot." At that time, Jeju Island was experiencing continuous snowfall and severe cold weather day after day.
Meanwhile, police officers from the Jeju Dongbu Police Station Central District Unit, who were patrolling the area, found an 80-year-old woman named Kim, squatting without even wearing an overcoat, and a dog staying by her side.
The police spoke to the elderly woman, but due to dementia, she was unable to communicate even simply. The police tried to find her family through fingerprint checks and other means but could not find any related records.
The police considered that the pet dog who stayed by the elderly woman could be a clue to finding her family and requested a microchip scan of the dog at an abandoned dog center.
The inquiry confirmed that the pet dog named 'Kami' was an abandoned dog adopted two years ago for the elderly woman. Based on this, the police were able to safely return the elderly woman to her family.
The police said, "The pet dog 'Kami,' who stayed by the elderly woman during the cold wave, has now become a reliable bodyguard protecting her."
