The Curtain Lifts on Censorship Scripts of Performing Arts from the 1960s to 1990s

The Arko Arts Archive of the Arts Council Korea will publicly release approximately 5,900 performance art scripts and documents reviewed by the Ministry of Education, the Korean Arts and Culture Ethics Committee, the Korean Performance Ethics Committee, and the Performance Ethics Committee from the 1960s to the 1990s starting on the 11th. The original reviewed scripts include Choi In-ho's Running Fools, which received measures such as rejection, conditional approval, or revision, Yoon Dae-sung's Slave Document, Oh Tae-young's Nanjoyusa, Kim Kwang-rim's I'm Always Alone in the Morning, and Lee Kang-baek's Do You Think I Am Someone Who Changes According to the Weather?. Some censorship materials such as release permits and review white papers will also be shown.

This is the first large-scale public release of original reviewed scripts. Since the enactment of the Performance Act in 1961, the performance industry has been subject to control and management under the pretext of public nature and ethics of performances. This release was made possible through donations from the Korean Film Archive, actor Kim Hwa-young, theater critics Han Sang-chul and Koo Hee-seo, and playwright Kim Ui-kyung. An official stated, "We expect that the public release of the originals will enable in-depth and multifaceted approaches to the patterns of censorship." The reviewed scripts can be accessed as digital materials on the Korean Arts Digital Archive. The official also mentioned, "About 170 cases acquired last year will be digitized and made available in the first half of this year."
