[Asia Economy Reporter Onyu Lim] The third wave of COVID-19 has begun in Kenya.
On the 11th (local time), according to the local daily Daily Nation, Mutahi Kagwe, Kenya's Minister of Health, stated that the third wave has officially started as the number of domestic COVID-19 cases recently increased, recording 713 confirmed cases the previous day.
The number of confirmed cases reported that day was based on 5,230 tests, with a positivity rate of 14%, marking the highest number of infections confirmed within 24 hours since November of last year, the minister added.
The minister also revealed that 12 people lost their lives in the past 24 hours, bringing the total death toll to 1,898.
As of that day, Kenya reported a cumulative total of 110,356 confirmed cases, with 563 patients currently hospitalized. Among them, 90 are receiving treatment in intensive care units, and 1,588 are being treated at home.
Meanwhile, Uhuru Kenyatta, President of Kenya, is scheduled to announce new COVID-19 regulatory measures, including the previously implemented nighttime curfew (from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m.), on the 12th.
