Changwon City Fully Revamps Traffic Signal Control System from Wired to Wireless Network

Relieving Resident Inconvenience Due to Road Excavation and Significantly Reducing Communication Costs

Changwon City Fully Revamps Traffic Signal Control System from Wired to Wireless Network

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Saeyan] Changwon City in Gyeongnam announced on the 9th that it plans to fully expand the 'wired network of the traffic signal control system' operating throughout the city to a wireless communication control network by the end of March.

The wireless network construction project targets 1,007 leased lines out of 1,044 online traffic signal controllers, with two communication companies (KT, LG Uplus) providing equipment and system construction free of charge under a 5-year contract period.

Upon completion of the change, it will be possible to reduce 'resident inconvenience caused by road excavation and annual communication fees of 53 million KRW.'

To ensure stable system construction, from January to February, the city and two communication companies (KT, LG U+) jointly operated a pilot by mixing 128 existing wired lines with wireless networks.

As a result of a joint inspection of the newly constructed wireless network by the city and the communication companies, signal control was smooth, and it met the six security requirements stipulated by relevant laws.

Accordingly, the remaining 879 lines will be fully converted in March to officially operate the wireless communication control network.

The existing wired network suffered from communication errors and poor quality due to aging and disconnection of communication lines, and real-time monitoring was impossible in remote outskirts with poor conditions.

However, by changing the communication method, efficient management of the system throughout the city has become much easier.

Je Jongnam, head of the New Transportation Promotion Division of Changwon City, stated, "Once the wireless traffic signal control network is completed, it will prevent resident inconvenience caused by communication conduit excavation, reduce communication fees, and improve service quality."
