Suncheon-si to Host 'International Women's Day' Commemoration Event This Year

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Hyung-kwon] Suncheon City (Mayor Heo Seok) announced on the 9th that it held a 'International Women's Day' commemorative event at the Suncheon Cultural Health Center on the previous day, organized by the Suncheon Women-Friendly Citizen Participation Group (President Kwon Ae-im) in celebration of International Women's Day.

This year's slogan for the 'International Women's Day' commemorative event is '#ChooseToChallenge'.

Accordingly, Suncheon City held a time to remember the women who changed history and celebrate women's achievements under the theme 'Change comes from challenge. Let us all choose challenge.'

On this day, the commemorative event reflected on the spirit of International Women's Day and expressed the desire for gender equality through the reading of the women's declaration, watching videos related to March 8 International Women's Day, a performance to abolish discrimination against women, and a bread and roses sharing performance.

Mayor Heo Seok of Suncheon said, "In the world of COVID-19, we will spare no support to expand women's participation in economic activities to realize an equal future and to become a women-friendly city where both genders are equal and happy."

Meanwhile, International Women's Day was established to commemorate the protest held on March 8, 1908, in the United States, where about 15,000 female textile workers demanded a 10-hour workday, improved working conditions, and suffrage.

The UN officially designated it as a legal commemorative day in 1975, South Korea in 2018, and Suncheon City held its own commemorative event for the first time this year.
