Passage of Gadeokdo New Airport Special Act at Cabinet Meeting
Ministry of Land Forms TF to Support Swift Implementation
[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Jiwon] The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced that following the passage of the 'Gadeokdo New Airport Special Act' at the Cabinet meeting on the 9th, it will establish a 'Gadeokdo New Airport Construction Promotion Task Force (TF)' within the ministry to provide support.
The Gadeokdo New Airport Special Act stipulates matters related to exemption from preliminary feasibility studies, basic and implementation plans, various permits and approvals, and the establishment of a new airport construction promotion team to expedite the construction of the Gadeokdo New Airport.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport plans to swiftly advance the construction of the Gadeokdo New Airport through the operation of the TF. The TF, which begins activities from today, will prepare the project until the formal launch of the new airport construction promotion team as stipulated by the Special Act.
The ministry explained, "As this is a major national project promoted through the enactment of the Special Act by the National Assembly, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport will strive to proceed with the project as quickly as possible while thoroughly reviewing the safety and functionality that the airport must have from the early stages of the project to ensure smooth progress."
For efficient decision-making, the TF will be placed directly under the Second Vice Minister of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, and the Director of Airport Policy, who oversees airport policies, will serve as the deputy head of the TF. The TF will manage the overall project including the preliminary feasibility study of the Gadeokdo New Airport, revision of subordinate laws, and operation of advisory groups.
Additionally, to ensure systematic division of work, two teams?the New Airport Construction Team and the New Airport Support Team?will share practical tasks, while local aviation offices will handle on-site support tasks such as field inspections and surveys.
Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Byeon Changheum emphasized, "We will concentrate our capabilities to successfully construct the Gadeokdo New Airport by thoroughly preparing even before the Special Act is enforced," adding, "We will provide all possible support to accelerate work promotion centered on the new TF."
