Gyeongnam Province Promotes Securing Eco-Friendly Carbon Sinks Through Tree Planting

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Saeyan] Gyeongsangnam-do announced on the 9th that it will invest 15.2 billion KRW to plant 3.19 million trees over 1,471 hectares of forest this year.

The tree planting initiative, aimed at enhancing the carbon absorption and storage capacity of forests and reducing fine dust, aligns with the government's '2050 Carbon Neutrality' declaration made last year.

Gyeongnam Province plans to create new forests including 850 hectares of economic forests for continuous production and supply of quality timber, 337 hectares of large tree plantations for forest disaster prevention, 76 hectares of regionally specialized plantations to increase mountain income, 108 hectares of fine dust reduction plantations to improve air quality, and 100 hectares of fire-resistant forest belts to prevent wildfire spread.

Additionally, local forest cooperatives and others will participate in spreading the atmosphere of citizen tree planting by selling fruit trees, ornamental trees, and landscaping trees at prices lower than market rates until April 30.

Jung Seok-won, Director of the Climate Environment and Forestry Bureau of Gyeongnam Province, stated that through tree planting, "we will ensure that the forest's carbon absorption capacity and fine dust reduction functions are optimally utilized, and manage the forests through forest cultivation to maximize carbon absorption effects."
