With a budget of 10.2 billion KRW secured as a pledge of the 7th term of local government, improvements to the drainage system and installation of odor reduction facilities are expected to alleviate odors... Completion in May 2022 will transform the area into a better neighborhood by expanding insufficient parking spaces and walking trails.
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Seongdong-gu (Mayor Jeong Won-oh) announced that it will commence this month the construction project to reduce the foul odor of Jeonnongcheon and create a resident-friendly space, which has been promoted since 2018 to solve the chronic foul odor problem of Jeonnongcheon.
Seongdong-gu is an area adjacent to the longest waterfront in Seoul, totaling 14.2 km along Cheonggyecheon, Jungnangcheon, and the Han River. Jeonnongcheon in the area of 192 Yongdap-dong has lost its river function due to the lack of natural water inflow and has caused significant inconvenience to residents, especially in summer, due to severe foul odors and insects caused by sewage inflow.
Accordingly, the district has set this as a pledge project of the 7th local government term, planning to install odor reduction facilities, restore the lost river function of Jeonnongcheon, and create a resident-friendly space.
To this end, since 2019, the district has conducted on-site inspections and feasibility studies of the project area, established a basic plan for Jeonnongcheon, secured a city budget of 10.2 billion KRW, and accelerated the project.
The project will improve about 400 meters of the river environment by reducing the sewage surface area, installing odor reduction facilities such as new initial rainwater pipes, and creating a waterfront landscape with walking trails, resident convenience facilities, sports facilities, and small streams.
In addition, parking lots, which are insufficient around Jeonnongcheon, will be expanded to provide convenience to residents. Natural walking trails and various sports facilities will be installed, transforming the area into an easily accessible healing space for local residents, scheduled for completion in May 2022.
Jeong Won-oh, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, said, “We will quickly transform Jeonnongcheon, which was avoided due to foul odors, into a resident-friendly space so that residents can enjoy and conveniently use the river. We will continue to do our best to create a pleasant residential environment.”
