Japanese Court Issues Ban on 'Hate Speech' Near Zainichi Korean University

[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunwoo Lee] A Japanese court has issued an order banning 'hate speech' activities (public discriminatory and hateful remarks against specific groups) criticizing and defaming the Korea University in Japan around its vicinity, Kyodo News reported.

According to Kyodo News on the 8th, the Tachikawa branch of the Tokyo District Court ordered a man who repeatedly engaged in so-called hate speech such as calling the Korea University in Japan "a murder university" on the roads near the university to refrain from hate speech within 500 meters of the school's main gate. The man claims to be the acting representative of a Japanese far-right organization that advocates exclusion of groups like the General Association of Korean Residents in Japan (Chongryon).

Earlier, the Korea University in Japan filed a provisional injunction with the court, requesting a ban on the man's repeated hate speech, arguing that it damaged the school's honor and interfered with its operations. The Japanese court is also reported to have prohibited the distribution of leaflets and the posting of placards or flags criticizing and defaming the university within 500 meters of the main gate.
