[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] On the 8th, Kim Young-jong, Mayor of Jongno-gu, participated in the 'GoGo Challenge' campaign, a movement to reduce plastic use in daily life, and pledged, "Collect transparent PET bottles properly and do not mix them with other plastics when disposing!"
The GoGo Challenge, initiated by the Ministry of Environment in January, is a relay campaign continuing to promote plastic reduction. It proceeds by sharing pledges to reduce plastic and disposable product use in daily life and nominating three successors.
Mayor Kim nominated Chae Hyun-il, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo-gu, Kim Seon-gap, Mayor of Gwangjin-gu, and Yoo Geun-gi, County Governor of Gokseong, as the next participants, proposing joint efforts to preserve a sustainable global ecosystem.
Since 2019, Jongno-gu has prohibited bringing disposable cups into government offices and encouraged individual employees to use reusable cups. It has also restricted disposable product use during various events to reduce disposable product consumption.
Although these efforts slowed somewhat due to eased disposable product regulations amid COVID-19, the district plans to renew its environmental conservation efforts starting with this campaign.
Kim Young-jong, Mayor of Jongno-gu, stated, "Reducing disposable product and plastic use depends primarily on individual actions," adding, "Jongno-gu will proactively implement separate collection of transparent plastics in single-family housing and commercial areas nationwide starting April 1, ahead of the nationwide enforcement at the end of this year. We hope for active interest and participation from many residents."
