Production Halt at Hyundai Motor and Mobis Asan Plant Due to Sonata Sales Slump

[Asia Economy Reporter Changhwan Lee] Due to sluggish Sonata sales, Hyundai Motor Company and Hyundai Mobis Asan plants will temporarily halt production.

Hyundai Motor and Hyundai Mobis announced on the 8th that they will suspend operations at the Asan plant for five days until the 12th. Production is scheduled to resume on the 15th.

Hyundai Motor stated that the suspension is "to enable flexible production and supply in response to decreased market demand." Hyundai Mobis will also temporarily halt production at the Asan plant in line with Hyundai Motor's suspension.

The Asan plant produces Hyundai Motor's flagship models, Grandeur and Sonata. Previously, the Hyundai Motor Asan plant also temporarily closed at the end of last year due to sluggish Sonata sales.

While the Grandeur has been highly popular, ranking as the best-selling vehicle from last year through this year, Sonata sales have significantly declined.

Hyundai Motor explained that the temporary halt is a measure to adjust production volume. However, they clarified that this is not related to the recent semiconductor supply shortages affecting the automotive industry.
