Weekend Theaters Finally Breathe Freely... 500,000 Visitors Gathered After 4 Months


The weekend box office finally breathed new life. Thanks to the success of the movie 'Minari,' more than 500,000 people gathered for the first time in over four months.


According to the Korea Film Council's integrated ticketing system, the number of moviegoers over the past weekend (May 5-7) was 524,315. This surpassed 500,000 for the first time in about four months since the second weekend of last November (13-15), which recorded 579,811. On the holidays of May 6 and 7, the numbers were 222,782 and 214,455 respectively. It has been 111 days since November 15 last year, when the movie 'Dugul' attracted 216,000 viewers in a single day, surpassing 200,000 viewers in one day.


The new release 'Minari' laid the foundation for this rebound. Over three days, it attracted 204,698 viewers across 1,162 screens (11,170 showings). It recorded a seat occupancy rate of 10.9% and a revenue share of 37.8%. The cumulative number of viewers reached 276,869. Another new release, 'Raya and the Last Dragon,' also performed relatively well, drawing 112,513 viewers on 1,056 screens (7,981 showings). Its seat occupancy rate was 8.1%, with a cumulative audience of 127,004.


'Demon Slayer: Mugen Train,' which led the box office on the last weekend of last month (April 26-28), recorded 88,494 viewers on 637 screens (3,949 showings). Although it dropped two ranks in the box office standings, it showed a 6.1% increase (5,117 viewers) compared to the last weekend of the previous month. Its seat occupancy rate (15.6%) was the highest among films securing more than 10,000 seats. The cumulative audience reached 1,052,396.


'Soul' (33,743 viewers; cumulative 1,965,139), 'Mission Possible' (28,059 viewers; cumulative 411,595), 'Chungking Express' (15,269 viewers; cumulative 35,743), 'Tom and Jerry' (10,358 viewers; cumulative 130,656), and 'Chaos Walking' (8,588 viewers; cumulative 138,864) followed in order.
