Ministry of Science and ICT, Announcement on the Morning of the 8th
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Bong-su] The Ministry of Science and ICT announced on the 8th that the recipients of the March 'Korea Engineer Award' were selected as Sangjun Bae, Senior Researcher at LS Cable Ltd., and Sulmok Park, Director of Chamgil Research Institute Co., Ltd.
This award is given monthly to one engineer each from a large corporation and a small-to-medium enterprise to foster a culture that values engineers leading technological innovation in the industrial field. The recipients receive the Minister of Science and ICT Award and a prize of 5 million KRW.
The large corporation awardee, Senior Researcher Bae, was recognized for his contribution to the localization of railway components through the development of rigid overhead contact lines for metropolitan and high-speed railways. Since the 1990s, rigid overhead contact lines for metropolitan railways, applied to lines such as Gwacheon and Bundang, have been monopolized by European manufacturers due to high technical barriers. Senior Researcher Bae developed an expansion joint device that is unaffected by length changes of the rigid overhead contact line caused by temperature variations by utilizing aluminum alloy technology and heat treatment processing techniques. This enabled the production of domestic components with superior quality to imported railway parts at a cost approximately 30% lower.
The small-to-medium enterprise awardee, Director Park, contributed to enhancing the competitiveness of the building interior materials industry through the development of environmentally friendly products such as liquid charcoal that blocks harmful substances and functional insulating paint. Using pollution-free natural charcoal as the main raw material, the blocking agent prevents various harmful substances from entering from outside, and the development of natural ingredient paint with high insulation and no harmful emissions achieved up to 70% energy savings. The eco-friendly building interior material technology also blocks harmful substances that affect skin diseases such as atopy and health, preventing not only new house syndrome but also sick house syndrome.
