Alan Shearer and Chris Sutton Records Broken After 26 Years
Son Heung-min and Harry Kane set the record for the most combined goals in a single season in the English Premier League (EPL).
On the 8th (Korean time), Tottenham won 4-1 at home against Crystal Palace in the 27th round of the 2020-2021 EPL season at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London, UK. Son Heung-min recorded his ninth league assist and sixteenth assist of the season. In the 31st minute of the second half, with Tottenham leading 3-1, he passed from the left side to Kane on the opposite side, who headed the ball into the goal. The assist was confirmed after a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review ruled the play onside.
With this, Son Heung-min and Kane have combined for fourteen goals this season in the league. They broke the 26-year-old record for the most combined goals in a single EPL season, previously held by Alan Shearer and Chris Sutton of Blackburn Rovers, who combined for thirteen goals in the 1994-1995 season.
The two players have driven Tottenham's rise with smooth chemistry since the beginning of the season. This combined goal came after about a month. They recorded their thirteenth combined goal in the 17th round against Leeds United on January 2, but Kane injured his ankle and was unable to maintain their usual synergy for a while. Thanks to the resumption of their combined goals on this day, Tottenham extended their winning streak to three games in the league and rose to sixth place.
Son Heung-min and Kane have combined for a total of thirty-four goals in the EPL so far. They are just two goals behind the all-time record for most combined goals, held by Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba (Chelsea) with thirty-six goals. With eleven regular league matches remaining, the possibility of breaking the record is considered high.
