[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jihwan] A delivery worker responsible for late-night duties at Coupang was found dead. The delivery workers' union plans to hold a protest rally, condemning that late-night deliveries led to death from overwork.
On the 7th, the Delivery Solidarity Union announced that Mr. Lee (48), who was in charge of late-night and early-morning deliveries at Coupang Songpa 1 Camp, had passed away.
The police responded to a report from his spouse around 3 p.m. the previous day, stating they could not contact Mr. Lee, and found him at a goshiwon in Songpa-gu, Seoul.
The union reported that Mr. Lee lived alone in a goshiwon in Seoul, having left his spouse and children in the provinces to earn money.
Mr. Lee joined Coupang last year as a contract worker and was later converted to a full-time employee. It was conveyed that he frequently expressed to his spouse the difficulties of late-night work.
The union stated, "The deceased's monthly wage was 2.8 million won, which is just above the minimum wage considering he was solely responsible for late-night labor."
The Delivery Solidarity Union plans to hold a press conference condemning that excessive late-night deliveries led to Mr. Lee's death from overwork at 2 p.m. on the 8th in front of Coupang headquarters in Songpa-gu, Seoul.
