[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Chun-han] Additional teachers at a Jeju daycare center where habitual child abuse incidents occurred have been arrested by the police.
On the 7th, the Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Police Agency announced that five daycare teachers have been booked and are under investigation on charges including the Special Act on the Punishment of Crimes of Child Abuse (Aggravated Punishment for Child Abuse by Workers at Child Welfare Facilities).
The police had previously booked two daycare teachers and conducted investigations, and through additional investigations, three more were booked. Following the police's further investigation, the number of children at the daycare center who were abused by teachers increased from the original 10 to 13.
The police analyzed closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage from the daycare center from November 9 of last year to the 15th of last month and confirmed circumstances indicating that teachers habitually abused children aged 1 to 3. The police reported that the CCTV footage showed scenes of teachers hitting the children’s heads with fists or striking the back of their heads.
The daycare center issued an apology statement saying, "We have conducted child abuse education for teachers once a month and have also used a child abuse checklist. Additionally, we have made efforts to enhance teachers' childcare commitment through assessing teachers' tendencies and psychological therapy, but we are truly sorry that such a situation has occurred."
