[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Eun-young] The cyber diplomacy group VANK has demanded that the online video service (OTT) Netflix properly inform viewers about Japan's history.
On the 6th, VANK pointed out that in the Japanese animation "Demon Slayer" currently airing on Netflix, earrings reminiscent of the Rising Sun Flag appear, and in the American drama "The Baby-Sitters Club," Japan is portrayed as a victim of war.
According to VANK, in the Japanese animation "Demon Slayer," the main character wears earrings that resemble the Rising Sun Flag. When Korean viewers protested, Netflix changed the earring design in the Korean version, but did not modify it in versions for countries like Australia.
In episode 6 of season 6 of the American drama "The Baby-Sitters Club," there is a dialogue stating, "During World War II, Japanese American citizens were classified by the U.S. as 'enemy aliens.' The government took their homes and put them in internment camps, just because they were Japanese." The Asian girl leading the story in the drama is portrayed as a trendy and smart student.
VANK believes this content could mislead children who do not know about the war into thinking that Japan was a victim rather than an aggressor. Therefore, they have demanded that explanations about Japan's history as a war criminal country be added.
