[Asia Economy Reporter Cha Min-young] KT announced on the 7th that it has released an advertisement themed on the ‘Emergency Vehicle Priority Signal Service’ to promote the ‘Smart Digital Road,’ the first of its kind in Korea, established on Jeju Island.
The Jeju next-generation traffic system (C-ITS) construction project, which began in June 2018 and was completed last December, involved building a communication network over approximately 300 km of major roads on Jeju Island to create a ‘digital road’ where vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-road communications are connected via a network. It provides drivers in transit with real-time information on surrounding traffic conditions, road surface, and weather, as well as warnings about hazards such as fallen objects and traffic accidents.
The representative technology of C-ITS, the ‘Emergency Vehicle Priority Signal Service,’ allows ambulances to control traffic signals so that critically ill patients can be transported to hospitals quickly. When transporting patients to the hospital, the Jeju Traffic Information Center tracks the vehicle’s location in real time using high-precision positioning (RTK) technology and maintains green signals at intersections to prevent the vehicle from being stopped by traffic lights. The RTK technology applied by KT is a system with higher accuracy than conventional GPS, enabling vehicle location to be identified within one meter, allowing precise signal control.
The Jeju C-ITS advertisement, which has been broadcast on terrestrial TV since the 6th, reenacts urgent situations where 119 paramedics and Jeju Traffic Information Center staff use the priority signal service to quickly transport patients. Actual active-duty personnel appeared in the advertisement to add realism.
Firefighters Kim Su-ho and Lee Seung-hwan of Jeju Fire Station said, “We can quickly move through major intersections or roads we previously avoided due to risk, preserving the golden time, which is a truly valuable system for patients and firefighters,” adding, “We hope it will be widely adopted in other cities to help save precious lives.”
Kim Hyung-wook, Vice President of KT’s Future Value Promotion Office, stated, “Smart digital roads are spreading not only domestically but globally through C-ITS, and they will play a role in advancing the era of autonomous driving,” emphasizing, “KT will continue to contribute to making smart digital roads using AI in more regions to improve the convenience of people’s lives.”
