[Asia Economy Reporter Jeon Jinyoung] Kim Youngchun, the Democratic Party of Korea's preliminary candidate for Busan mayor, was confirmed as the final Democratic Party candidate for the April 7 Busan mayoral by-election on the 6th. Kim secured first place in the three-way race against candidates Byun Seongwan and Park Inyoung, enabling him to advance to the Busan mayoral election.

The Democratic Party Election Commission announced that, based on the combined results of votes from party members and virtual mobile voters, Kim received 67.64%, surpassing preliminary candidates Byun Seongwan (25.12%) and Park Inyoung (7.14%), thus confirming him as the final candidate.

Kim's pledges include the completion of Gaduk New Airport by 2029, hosting and successfully executing the 2030 Busan World Expo, and the completion of the Bu-Ul-Gyeong (Busan-Ulsan-Gyeongnam) Mega City.

Kim previously served as a member of the National Assembly in its 16th, 17th, and 20th sessions and was the first Minister of Oceans and Fisheries under the Moon Jae-in administration. After losing in the 21st general election, he served as the Secretary-General of the National Assembly. He has attempted to run for Busan mayor several times in the past but was unsuccessful.
