[Asia Economy Reporter Sung Kiho] The World Health Organization (WHO) European Office has issued a warning regarding the recent increase in new COVID-19 cases in Europe after six consecutive weeks of decline.
According to local media on the 5th (local time), Hans Kluge, WHO Regional Director for Europe, stated the day before that new cases are rising again in Central and Eastern Europe as well as in some Western European countries that already had high infection rates.
Kluge said that last week, new COVID-19 cases in Europe increased by 9%, surpassing one million, marking the end of a six-week decline.
He explained that new cases have increased in more than half of the 53 countries. Countries such as France, Italy, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, and Poland have recently seen a sharp rise in new cases. In Hungary, on the 4th, 6,278 new cases were recorded, the highest daily number in the past three months.
Kluge especially urged strengthening vigilance and response against variant viruses known to be more infectious.
