Iran: "No Renegotiation of Nuclear Deal with the United States"

[Asia Economy Reporter Seong Giho] Iran once again emphasized that renegotiation is impossible regarding the restoration of the nuclear agreement (JCPOA·Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action) with the United States.

According to Iran's state news agency, Mohammad Javad Zarif, Iran's Foreign Minister, stressed on Twitter on the 5th (local time) that "the JCPOA cannot be renegotiated."

Minister Zarif wrote, "If 2021 is not 2015, then it is not 1945 either," adding, "So let's amend the UN Charter and remove the veto power, which is often abused by the United States." This is interpreted as a rejection of the U.S. demand to revise the JCPOA.

Iran reached the nuclear agreement with the United States in 2015 during the presidency of former U.S. President Barack Obama. However, when former U.S. President Donald Trump unilaterally declared the termination of the nuclear agreement in 2018, Iran gradually reduced the scope of its compliance with the JCPOA provisions starting from May 2019.
