[Asia Economy Reporter Seong Giho] China once again emphasized that "Hong Kong is a part of China."
Wang Wenbin, spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated at a regular briefing on the 5th in response to a question about "voices saying there is an attempt to reform the election system to remove opposition factions," that "Hong Kong is a Special Administrative Region of China, and Hong Kong's election system is part of China's local election system."
Spokesperson Wang further emphasized, "All countries around the world determine their local election systems and have common constitutions and political systems."
He added, "The issue of which election system to choose is China's internal affair," and claimed, "China's position on Hong Kong is supported by the majority of the international community."
Earlier, Wang Chen, Vice Chairman of the National People's Congress (NPC), explained the necessity of reforming Hong Kong's election system at the 4th annual session of the 13th NPC held at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing that morning, pointing out that "some foreign forces have exploited loopholes in Hong Kong's election system to interfere in Hong Kong affairs."
