[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Dong-hyun] BTS has won the Global Recording Artist of the Year award presented by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI).
On the 4th (local time), foreign media reported that IFPI announced the results of the 2020 global artist selection.
Since 2013, IFPI has selected global artists from pop singers and groups worldwide. This is the first time that an Asian artist, including from Korea, has topped the global artist ranking, surpassing stars from the UK and US.
IFPI selected BTS as the number one global artist last year based on their musical achievements, calling BTS "a global phenomenon." BTS's "Dynamite" and "Life Goes On" gained sensational popularity, reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart last year.
IFPI stated, "BTS had an outstanding year, releasing three albums and finding creative and engaging ways to share their stories with the world," adding, "BTS has demonstrated the true power of music to bring joy and happiness to people worldwide."
BTS was ranked first, surpassing American pop diva Taylor Swift (2nd) and Canadian rapper Drake (3rd). Other artists on this year's list include The Weeknd (4th), Billie Eilish (5th), Eminem (6th), Post Malone (7th), Ariana Grande (8th), Juice WRLD (9th), and Justin Bieber (10th).
The IFPI Global Artist award has traditionally been dominated by UK and US pop stars such as One Direction (2013), Taylor Swift (2014, 2019), Adele (2015), Drake (2016, 2018), and Ed Sheeran (2017).
