Hyundai BioLand Obtains Individual Recognition Approval for Joint Health Functionality... Accelerates Development of Health Supplement Ingredients

[Asia Economy Reporter Seungjin Lee] Hyundai BioLand has succeeded in developing a raw material for joint health functional foods.

Hyundai BioLand, a comprehensive healthcare company affiliated with Hyundai Department Store Group, announced on the 4th that its developed raw material for health functional foods, ‘Fermented Usuldeung Complex,’ has obtained individual recognition approval for joint health functionality (No. 2020-12) from the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS).

‘Fermented Usuldeung Complex’ is a new composite natural extract made by combining natural medicinal herbs such as Usul (a perennial herb of the Amaranthaceae family), Duchung (a deciduous tree of the Eucommiaceae family), and Chamdanggui (a biennial or triennial herb of the Apiaceae family).

A Hyundai BioLand official stated, “Usul has efficacy in treating arthritis, Duchung improves immunity, and Chamdanggui also has anti-inflammatory and anticancer effects,” adding, “We devised a new raw material for health functional foods that can help improve joint health by blending these three natural medicinal herbs in appropriate proportions.”

The official further added, “With the individual recognition approval from the MFDS, it has been confirmed that the main components of ‘Fermented Usuldeung Complex,’ such as saponin, 20-Hydroxyecdysone, oleanolic glycoside, and succinic acid, have effects that block the activation of joint inflammation-inducing factors and inhibit cell damage caused by inflammation within the joints.”

Hyundai BioLand has secured an exclusive position to produce and supply ‘Fermented Usuldeung Complex’ following this approval. ‘Individual recognition for health functional foods’ is a system where the MFDS scientifically verifies and reviews the functionality of raw materials or their efficacy that are not listed in the ‘Health Functional Food Standards and Specifications,’ the official standards and specifications for health functional foods announced by the MFDS. Although the acquisition process is very stringent, once approved, the company gains exclusive rights to use the raw materials and their efficacy.

A Hyundai BioLand official said, “We plan to introduce additional new high-functional raw materials for health functional foods reflecting consumers’ increased interest in health after COVID-19.”
